WHAT IS CBD?
Cannabidiol, or CBD as it is commonly known, is one of the main active compounds found in the Cannabis sativa plant. The other main compound found in the cannabis plant is Tetrahydrocannbinol (THC) which has intoxicating effects – or the “high” associated with marijuana. Unlike THC, CBD is not psychoactive. Cannabinoids, including CBD and THC, bind to special cannabinoid receptors in the brain.
There is significant evidence that CBD has all the effectiveness as a novel anti-inflammatory medicine. Over the last decade, a growing amount of published research provides supporting evidence of the long-standing theory that there is a strong connection between chronic inflammation and many common diseases – even that chronic inflammation is the precursor to most disease.
CBD AND PAIN
The most common use for CBD is for treating chronic pain -which is associated with insomnia, depression, anxiety and a host of other ailments. Some of these people wish to avoid the side effects frequently associated with standard pain medication, such as damage to the liver and kidneys, while others have concerns about becoming dependent on such medications. For many people, CBD offers a natural, non-intoxicating solution to managing chronic pain.
CBD AND ANXIETY
Anxiety is the most common mental health issue facing the U.S. today. According to the authors of one 2015 medical review, CBD interacts with the cannabinoid type 1 receptor (CB1R), the serotonin 5-HT1A receptor, and other receptors in the brain that regulate fear and anxiety-induced behaviors. There is plenty of scientific research demonstrating the benefits of CBD for managing anxiety, however proper dosage varies depending on the method of administering CBD (tincture, edible, spray, vape) and the individual’s own brain chemistry. Always choose a high-quality CBD product with transparent labeling and quality assurances and seek the advice of your health practitioner.
